Do You Like American Music?

Originally posted on 1/31/2007

Ok I try to be open to lots of different kinds of music, but I hate when otakus get on my case about not liking j-pop or j-rock music. I had the same problem with people getting mad at me because I didn't like Spanish music. I have a hard time understanding music in a language I don't understand. Sorry if I sound closed minded but that's what I like. "I like American music, baby!" I like any kind of music that has lyrics as long as it's in English. But a lot of people misunderstand and think when I say "English music" they think I mean music from England, when I really mean music in English.

I also hate when they get mad because you never heard of their favorite Asian artist, or because I haven't given up on English music. Because to them nothing is worth listening to in English. I see this all the time on message boards I go to, "I CAN'T believe you've never heard of Dir en grey, BoA, Hitomi Shimatani, Flow, Namie Amuro, DBSK, Gackt, Mika Nakashima, Lee Hyori, Ayumi Hamasaki, Miyavi, Jolin Tsai, Rain, Super Junior, TSZX, Sowelu, Crystal Kay,
Nana Kitade, Ai Otsuka, Tomoko Kawase, Mika Nakashima, Do As Infinity, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Stephanie Cheng, MUCC,  X Japan, Malice Mizer, Ali Project, UVERworld, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR, YUI, Koda Kumi, alice nine., Nightmare, Nami Tamaki,  Miyavi, WaT, Se7en, or Liu Yifei.

Heard of them?! I don't even know who they are.

I do like the song "Simple and Clean" by Utada Hikaru That I heard in the Kingdom Hearts commercial. I also like the song "Let's Fighting Love" from South Park.

The one thing I do like about Asian music is when they insert random English words and phrases. For example look at the lyrics of Strawberry SEX by Hirai Ken.

And another thing I forgot or neglected to mention in the other Asiaphile blog I wrote I am not Asian. So I don't want people to assume I am. If you want the real dirt on my ethnicity I'm mixed; White and Hispanic (Mexican)
